What better place to get kids excited about learning than the outdoors! Watching a creepy tarantula amble across a rock only feet from your student is more likely to solicit his interest than a picture in a textbook. Dissecting owl pellets among the trees where mice are actually preyed upon divulges greater understanding of the food chain, niches and population control within the forest. Here at Tonto Rim everywhere you walk an opportunity arises to discover botany, zoology, entomology, meteorology and of course astronomy.
The surrounding Tonto National fores, with itsĀ stunning hiking trails and rippling brooks to observe an array of wildlife, make a great environment for a science camp for kids. If you are here in the summer you may see native berry bushes or grape vines and get to try some organic locally grown fruit. Just up the mountain, Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery provides students the opportunity to observe how fish are bred and familiarize them with native the fish and game of Arizona.
